New Mobile App Helps Cut Food Waste

Unilever Food Solutions UK and Ireland has launched an industry-first mobile app to help chefs and caterers identify and reduce avoidable food waste.

Tools for the Trade

The Wise Up on Waste app allows chefs to track food waste to highlight the average volume of each type of waste (spoilage, preparation or customer plate waste), generated per ‘day part’ (breakfast, lunch and dinner), per day and per cover.

It uses the information to generate email summaries showing performance against the industry average and progress graphs, giving week-by-week comparisons to help identify the indicative cost savings for a business.
The app also contains case study videos and is packed full of waste action tips, recipes and spoilage prevention advice.

Waste Not, Save More

Up to 50% of the world’s food is being thrown away, and up to 2 billion tonnes of food produced around the world never makes it onto a plate. And each tonne of food waste costs a business £1,800.

UFS is challenging chefs to cut their food waste by at least 5% over their chosen time period – and see how much money they can save in the process.

Tracey Rogers, Managing Director of Unilever Food Solutions, says: “The app has been designed to make it as easy as possible for chefs to ensure food is not being wasted in the kitchen. It takes our online Wise Up on Waste toolkit one step further, giving chefs a mobile tool that allows them to track waste at their fingertips.”

Easy to Use

The Wise Up on Waste app is compatible with iOS (Apple) and Android devices and is free to download from the Apple store and Google Play. A free web version is also available for BlackBerry handsets (optimised for BBOS6+) and other devices.

It launched in the UK at the start of June and will be rolled out to other countries across the world in the near future.

The app is part of UFS’s plans to help chefs make 200 million daily meals healthier, tastier and more enjoyable as well as run a more efficient kitchen, reduce waste and source 100% of raw agricultural materials sustainably by 2020.
