Celebrate World Environment Day on Akshay Tritiya

Jaipur, Rajasthan - The Annakshetra Foundation, an initiative organized to tackle the issue of food waste, will organize a programme for collecting leftover food and re-distributing this to underprivileged communities in Jaipur in support of World Environment Day and the Think.Eat.Save. Reduce Your Foodprint! campaign. The Foundation will collect leftover food from over 200 wedding parties that are going to be held on “Akshay Tritiya”, 14 May, a traditional auspicious day for marriages.

The Annakshetra Foundation is an initiative by the Centre for Development Communication (CDC) that is focused on the redistribution of excess food in weddings, parties, restaurants and temples. Since its inception in 2010, 75,500 people have benefited from the program and over half a million meals have been served.

For ‘Annakshetra Mahabhoj’ to be a success, all the caterers, owners of marriage gardens, hoteliers have been contacted and appealed to.

This step towards societal benefit will help address hunger on one hand and reduce foodprints by diverting food that would have otherwise been sent to landfills.
