New York Food Waste Festival, Union Square

Food Waste Festival
Organized with Think.Eat.Save. and the Feeding the 5000
19 September, 12.00 - 15.00, Union Square, New York City

Open to the public - everyone is welcome to have free lunch at the Festival!

This will be a high--‐profile ‘umbrella’ event designed to work together with an alliance of organisations at all levels to raise awareness of the scale of food waste in the US and globally and to promote the uptake of positive solutions to the problem. The event, which will be organised as one of the key elements of the ‘Think.Eat.Save: Reduce your Foodprint’ campaign in the North America region, will be a spectacular public celebration of the positive win-win solutions to food waste. It will bring the issue at the centre of public and political attention, providing the impetus for businesses, government and the public to take up the easily implementable, positive actions to tackle food waste that are already being undertaken by partner organisations on the ground.

The format of the event is based on providing a delicious free feast for thousands of members of the public, sourced entirely from fresh top-quality produce that would have otherwise been wasted. The ingredients come directly from farmers and other food businesses who donate their fresh surplus produce for the event: misshapen potatoes, cosmetically imperfect carrots, weather blemished apples, and other fresh but unmarketable products. The event organisers source quality food that is not already reaching humans so as to ensure that there is no possibility of using food for the event that would otherwise have been captured by food redistribution organisations.
